Key Takeaways:

Seven days in Turkey is enough to see the best of what the country has to offer. However, for a trip to go smoothly, you need to plan it correctly.
The common mistake is spending too many days in Istanbul and then rushing through other cities and missing out on some of Turkey’s best things to do.
This Turkey itinerary for 7 days provides a clear day-by-day schedule across four destinations: Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus, and Kusadasi.
Important Information for Your Turkey Trip
- Turkish cuisine is centred on meat. In Istanbul, you can find vegetarian food quite easily. In Cappadocia, Ephesus, and Kusadasi, vegetarian food is available, but options are more limited outside Istanbul.
- When you visit mosques, cover your shoulders, arms, and legs before entering any mosque, and women need a headscarf.
- Carry Turkish Lira in cash. Many small restaurants and local vendors do not take cards.
- Take a museum pass to save money on individual site entries.
- Buy a Turkcell SIM at the airport on arrival for better network coverage.
Day-Wise Plan for Turkey Itinerary 7 Days
Get to know the detailed plan on what to do in Turkey for one week. From which city to land, where to visit, this section makes your trip hassle-free.
Day 1: Arrive in Istanbul
Land in Istanbul and travel to your hotel in the Sultanahmet area. This area offers some of the best things to do in Istanbul, which are within walking distance, including Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Basilica Cistern, cafes and the Grand Bazaar.
Airport to hotel: Istanbul Airport is 47 km from Sultanahmet. Avoid random taxis outside the terminal; book an Uber. You will reach the area in 50 – 60 minutes, check into your hotel and rest.
Evening: Join a Bosphorus dinner cruise. The cruise takes 3 hours; during that time, you can see the Bosphorus Bridge and Istanbul’s skyline from the water at night.
Apart from the views, the dinner cruise also includes a folk dancing performance, giving you a perfect Turkish nightlife experience.

Day 2: Full Day Istanbul City Tour
Start at 8:30 AM from your stay and visit the main landmarks before the afternoon crowds. All five stops below are within a walking distance of each other in Sultanahmet.
Hagia Sophia (9 AM): Built in 537 AD as a Byzantine cathedral, later converted to a mosque in 1453, then turned into a museum in 1935, and converted back to a mosque in 2020.
Blue Mosque (10:30 AM): Built between 1609 and 1616 with six minarets, and the interior has 20,000 hand-painted blue Iznik tiles.
Basilica Cistern (11:30 AM): It is an underground water reservoir built in the 6th century. You can walk on platforms above the water while 336 marble columns surround you.
Lunch (12:30 PM): Take a lunch break and eat at a local restaurant in Sultanahmet.
Topkapi Palace Museum (2:30 PM): This was the residence of Ottoman sultans for over 400 years, and the palace covers 70,000 square metres. Inside, see the Topkapi Dagger, the Spoonmaker’s Diamond, and Suleiman the Magnificent’s personal weapons.
Grand Bazaar (4:30 PM): It is one of the world’s oldest covered markets, with 61 covered streets and over 4,000 shops. You can buy Turkish souvenirs and specialities here, such as Turkish carpets, ceramics, evil eye charms, dried fruits, perfumes, Turkish delight, and jewellery.
Shopping and browsing in the market takes more than 3 hours, and it depends on how much you buy.

Day 3: Istanbul to Cappadocia
- Morning: Wake up and have breakfast at the hotel, then check out around 11 AM.
Either book your flight early to Cappadocia or join a coffee-making workshop with a fortune-telling session and take your flight later. This costs approximately 2,000 INR.
- Afternoon: After the coffee workshop, have lunch and travel to Istanbul Airport. Fly from Istanbul to Kayseri airport. It takes 1 hour and 20 minutes via flight. From the airport, the ride to Goreme town takes 1 hour and 10 minutes.
Domestic one-way cost: approximately 3,500 – 6,000 INR.
- Evening to Night: The best place to stay in Cappadocia is Goreme town, where you can easily access most activities from here. Especially, the cave hotels are very famous. They are carved into volcanic rock and are one of the genuinely unique accommodation experiences in Cappadocia.
If you have time, explore the stay, and most hotels have terraces where you can relax. Make sure you go to bed early and wake up early for the hot air balloon ride.

Day 4: Cappadocia
Morning: Wake up at 3:30 AM. It will be cold, so layering is a must when you dress up. The pickup is around 4:00 – 4:30 AM. You will be taken to the launch site and watch the balloon inflate.
The flight lasts 60 minutes. The highlight is the sunrise view from above the valleys. It is unlike anywhere, as you will be flying in the sky as the sun rises, over the fairy chimney rock formations in the valleys below, including Love Valley and Rose Valley.
After landing, there will be a small champagne celebration. You will return to your hotel by 9 AM, then you can rest.
Afternoon: Visit nearby restaurants for lunch. By late afternoon, book a cab to Goreme Open Air Museum. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, 1 kilometre from Goreme town centre. You will see a group of rock-cut cave churches and monasteries used by Byzantine Christian communities between the 10th and 13th centuries.
Then hike the valleys around Goreme, which are free to enter and easy to walk. The Red Valley trail is 3 kilometres and takes 1.5 – 2 hours. The best time to hike is the late afternoon, from 4 PM onwards, to see the rocks turn from orange to deep red as the sun sets.
Night: Enjoy the Turkish night show, which happens at the cave restaurant, where many tourists share a dinner table. The show includes a Whirling Dervish ceremony, folk dances from different regions of Turkey, fire dancing, and a multi-course dinner with local drinks.

Day 5: Cappadocia to Ephesus
Morning: Visit the Devrent Valley (Imagination Valley) early in the morning, where the rock formations resemble animals and human figures. Then go to Pasabag (Monks Valley), where you will see mushroom-shaped fairy chimneys.
Afternoon: Take a flight to Izmir, which takes 1 hour and 30 minutes. From Izmir, travel to Selcuk, the small town near Ephesus. Check in at the hotel, relax and have lunch.
Evening: Walk around Selcuk town centre, which is small and easy to cover on foot. You can stop by Isa Bey Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in the region, or just walk the local streets and visit cafes.

Day 6: Ephesus and Kusadasi
Morning: Visit Ephesus at 8 AM, that’s when there is a moderate crowd, and the heat is less. Ephesus was a Greek and Roman city and the best-preserved ancient city in Turkey.
The sights to cover inside the city:
- Library of Celsus: A 2nd-century Roman library.
- Great Theatre: It is a stone-carved theatre and seats 25,000 people.
- Curetes Street: The main marble-paved road of the city, along which you can walk and see temple ruins and fountain structures on both sides.
- House of the Virgin Mary: Travel 7 kilometres from Ephesus, in the hills above the city. This is a small stone house believed to be where Mary, the mother of Jesus, spent her final years.
Afternoon: Ephesus tour takes nearly 3 – 4 hours. Return to your hotel around 12 – 1 PM, have lunch and rest.
Evening: Drive to Kusadasi, to enjoy some beach time in Turkey, which is just 27 kilometres away. You can try jet skiing, parasailing, swimming at the beach, and watching the sunset by the beach. Spend some time at the beach and return to your stay.

Day 7: Departure Day
Check out and travel to Izmir Airport for your flight back to Istanbul. From Istanbul, take a flight back to India. If your flight is in the late evening, you can do last-minute shopping.

3. What should I buy in Turkey?
Turkish carpets, ceramic plates (hand-painted blue and white Iznik style), evil eye charms, Turkish coffee and cezve (copper coffee pot), saffron, Turkish delight (lokum), and leather goods. Buy these from the Grand Bazaar or Spice Bazaar in Istanbul rather than resort shops, where prices are higher.
