Documents Required to Get a Visa

If you are travelling to Mauritius as a tourist for a period of time less than 60 days, you will get a visa when you reach the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) airport. When you land, just head to the immigration desk and present the documents mentioned below-

Passport

Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of your entry into Mauritius. Additionally,

  • If your passport has been renewed, carry both the old and the new passport.
  • The passport must be in good condition, without any damage or wear and tear.
  • Ensure that there are enough blank pages left in your passport.

Return Flight Tickets

A proof of return or onward travel is necessary to demonstrate your intention to leave Mauritius before the visa period ends. Indian immigration may also request this at the time of departure; boarding may be denied without this proof.

Confirmation of Accommodation

A hotel/resort booking confirmation is generally required, or if staying with friends/family, their address should be provided.

If a local resident sponsors your stay, a letter of sponsorship, along with proof of their address and identification, is required.

Sufficient Funds

You’ll need to give your financial documents to demonstrate that you have enough money to sustain yourself in the country. The minimum amount of money you would need is $50 to $100 per person, per day

Always carry cash in Mauritian Rupees (MUR) as they are widely accepted.

All-in-One Travel Digital Form

The Mauritius All-in-One travel digital Form must be completed online before travel, ideally within 72 hours of your scheduled flight. This form collects personal, health, and travel details and issues a printable PDF with a QR code for airport screening.

If the form isn’t completed in advance, an Immigration Disembarkation Card must be filled out upon arrival; however, prior submission is highly recommended. Health authorities use the form for surveillance; failure to submit it could result in denied entry.

Passport-Sized Photos

Not compulsory, but it is recommended to always carry at least two copies of a passport-sized photograph of yourself. It might be helpful in one way or another.

Travel Insurance

Though not mandatory, travel insurance is highly recommended. The insurance will cover the costs of unexpected situations, including medical emergencies, flight delays, and other related expenses. At times, immigration officers also might request it.

Note: All seven documents are basic necessities; no matter what visa you are applying for, always have multiple copies of these documents for safety.

Types of Mauritius Visa for Indians

Mauritius offers a range of visa options for Indian citizens, extending beyond the standard short-term tourist visa on arrival.

Here’s an overview of each type, including processes, required documents, and practical tips, all based on up-to-date reference.

Tourist Visa Extension

If you wish to extend your stay for more than 60 days as a tourist, you need to visit the Passport and Immigration Office in Port Louis. Once you are inside, download the Visa extension form and submit it to the authorities to extend your stay for up to another 90 days.

Note: The extension of the visa is also free!

Along with the Visa extension form, please submit copies of your passport, a copy of the arrival stamp on your passport, accommodation proof, return flight tickets, and proof of sufficient funds, which is at least $50 per day or ₹4,384 per day.

Tip: It’s a must to submit your return tickets, but if you don’t have a particular timeline, then you can book the ‘flexi’ flight tickets, which will let you change the dates or cancel the ticket at no extra cost.

Business Visa

As an employee or entrepreneur, you can visit Mauritius multiple times within 120 days with a Business visa for Mauritius.

Note: Multiple entries in 120 days, but one can spend only a maximum of 90 days per trip in Mauritius.

The visa can be acquired on arrival at the airport, and the standard documents are proof of accommodation, return tickets, and photographs. Along with these documents mentioned below-

Letter from the Company

A formal letter from your company, stating the reasons for your visit.

Funds/Sponsorship Letter

If the company is covering your trip, then you’ll need to present a sponsorship letter from the company.

Police Clearance Certificate (if requested)

In some cases, Immigration authorities may request a police clearance certificate to verify that you have no unresolved criminal cases against you.

Social Visa

Mauritius celebrates many religious and social events. If you’ve been invited to or help organise such an event, then you can opt for this Social visa. By applying for this Visa, you’ll get to stay 45 days in the country of Mauritius.

Just like the other visas, you’ll need all the basic documents, including an official letter of invitation from the event you are attending.

Premium Travel Visa

If you are a digital nomad, a retiree or a long-term traveller planning to spend an extended period in Mauritius, consider obtaining the premium travel visa. By obtaining this visa, you can stay in the country for a period ranging from 6 months to 1 year. Also, it’s yearly renewable

The advantage of obtaining a premium visa is that you are exempt from government taxation in Mauritius until you use a foreign credit or debit card. However, if you have a Mauritian bank account, it will generally be taxed. But also, if you can prove that you pay tax in your home country, then you won’t be taxed.

Another advantage is that you can purchase an apartment anywhere in Mauritius, and you can also buy and register a car in your name.

Although one key rule is that, as a foreigner, you cannot enter the Mauritian labour market. All the money that you earn must be from outside the country.

Transit Visa

In the event of a layover in Mauritius while connecting to another international flight, you’ll need a Transit Visa, which allows you to stay for up to 24 hours. It is required only if the layout exceeds 2 hours.

With getting the Transit Visa, you are free to leave the airport to explore nearby towns, have a quick bite from a local restaurant or simply rest at a hotel.

Note: This Mauritius visa processing time is 5-7 business days. So, make sure you do it at least 2 weeks before your transit at the Mauritius airport.

Medical Visa

Patients who travel to Mauritius for medical treatment should consider this Medical visa option. Just like a tourist visa, you can get a medical visa on arrival by submitting all the basic papers. These requirements also extend to your attenders’ or caretakers’ documents.

Apart from the basic documents, you must also submit a Medical certificate and a doctor’s note stating your medical condition.

Note: This visa is valid only for a maximum of 6 months.

Travel Insurance

According to the Passport and Immigration Office of Mauritius, travel insurance is not required for entry into the country. However, it is a wise choice to get one.

We all want to have a smooth travel experience, but in the event of an emergency, we would need a safety net in a foreign land. This is when travel insurance will come in handy to help us.

Things that most travel insurance policies would cover are-

Medical Emergency

Travel insurance will cover the cost of any hospital bills resulting from sickness, accidents, or surgeries. This will definitely help you avoid a significant dent in your pocket.

Loss of Luggage

In the event of luggage loss, delay, or theft, travel insurance provides compensation and offers a financial backup.

Loss of Passport

Losing your passport in an unknown country is scarier than losing your luggage. If that happens, you’ll need to go through a tedious process of getting a new passport in the country you are in, and that will come at a price. However, if are are insured, then you will be covered.

Trip Cancellation

In case of any emergency, trip cancellation before the trip or cutting short the trip, you’ll be covered. By getting insurance, you don’t need to worry about losing the entire trip’s cost

Missing a Connecting Flight

Missing a connecting flight means your upcoming plans are disrupted, along with a significant amount of money to book another flight. Insurance will cover the additional expenses and keep your budget intact.

Flights

Mauritius is a country not too far away from India. It will just take 6-7 hours from India to the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) airport.

Currency Exchange

Travelling abroad is not possible without proper funds. And your money needs to be converted into the local currency to be accepted by the locals.

The official currency of Mauritius is the Mauritius Visa for Indians

1 INR = 1.91 MUR (As of 2025)

As MUR is the official currency, it is widely accepted everywhere in Mauritius. However, instead of converting INR to MUR directly, it’s smarter to convert INR to USD first.

  1. USD is easy to convert into MUR in Mauritius, but not INR.
  2. Unlike INR, USD is a global reserve currency which will give better exchange rates.
  3. Leftover USD can be easily converted into INR once you are back in India, but not MUR.

There are currency exchange desks at the SSR airport arrivals area, where you can exchange some initial cash. Later, look for currency exchange services at local markets and banks for better rates.

Note: While USD and Euros might be accepted in tourist-focused shops and hotels, it’s best to stick with MUR because everyone accepts it.

Sim Cards

Staying connected is essential while travelling abroad for navigation, calls, or even sharing your pictures on Instagram.

There are four telecom companies in Mauritius:

  • Emtel
  •  My.t
  •  Telecom
  • Chilli

Note: Emtel and My.t have the broadest range of connectivity, while Chili might not get a network at a few spots.

Where to Buy a SIM

When you land in Mauritius and enter the arrival hall after immigration, you will find numerous desks offering SIM cards, currency exchange services, and tour operations.

You’ll find Telecom’s desk, and Emtel will have its kiosk outside the airport at gate number 5.

Just like any telecom company, they also offer multiple plans; however, the most popular among tourists are the Emtel online tourist pack and My.t tourist pack. You can either buy physical cards from the airport or book an e-SIM before your arrival.

Emtel and My.t both offer the same package at nearly the same price.

Unlimited data, unlimited local SMS and 200 free calls, all valid for 30 days. Emtel sells the pack for ₹2,858; meanwhile, My.t sells it for ₹3,061.

Tip: If you are going as a couple, consider buying one Emtel sim and one My.t sim. This way, even if one loses coverage, the other will likely still have a network. Keeping you both connected at all times.

Car Rentals

Having your own vehicle is the best way to explore a new place at your own pace. The luxury of a self-driven vehicle means spontaneity; you can change your plans according to your comfort. Additionally, you don’t need to spend a fortune on taxis.

And the good news for tourists is that, according to ‘Guide to Mauritius’, you can drive in Mauritius with your Indian driver’s license for 4 weeks!

Beyond that, you’ll need to have an International Driver’s Permit (IDP) or request permission to continue driving with your Indian license at the Traffic Police Station in Mauritius. But this can be a lengthy process.

Getting a car rental is pretty straightforward. When you get out of the SSR airport, you can spot a grey building. Upon entering, you can see 12 booths representing different rental companies.

The prices will vary depending on the car rental company and the car model you choose, and they can range anywhere between  ₹2000 to ₹10,000

Tip: We would suggest the car rental companies of AKD Maurice, Sixt and Europcar, but do consider enquiring at multiple company desks at the airport to find the cheapest or the best one for you.

Conclusion

Mauritius is a beautiful part of Africa, and it’s excellent news that as Indians, we don’t need to try hard to get into the Island. From accepting Indian driver’s licenses for 4 weeks to offering a Visa on Arrival, the Island is very accommodating.

Mauritius is also one of the safest countries, and being a neighbour, how can we ignore this wonder?
