Freedom Beach stands out among Thailand’s beaches for its lack of commercial activity. There are no jet skis, no parasailing, no loud beach clubs or even local vendors selling food and souvenirs. Freedom Beach is simply famous for its quietness.

Where is Freedom Beach Located in Thailand?

Freedom Beach is on the west coast of Phuket, in the Kathu District. It is between Patong Beach in the north (4.8 km) and Karon Beach in the south (5.5 km).

It sits below a forested hill and is not connected by a direct road. The closest place you can drive is the parking area at the top of the hill. From there, you need to take a short 15 – 20 minute hike to the shoreline.

Parking areas: The Lek Sand Beach Bar near the Avista Hideaway Hotel.

How to Get to Freedom Beach in Phuket?

There are two ways to reach Freedom Beach: by boat and by hiking.

1. Take a Short Hike

There are two trails to the beach, the Lek Sand Route and the Patong Hill Road Route. Take a Grab to the road near the trail entrance.

  • The Lek Sand Route: The walk starts near The Lek Sand Beach Bar. It takes up to 15 to 20 minutes to walk on a steep path. There will be ropes tied to trees in certain sections to help you safely when there is a slope.
  • The Patong Hill Road Route: Start the walk near the Avista Hideaway hotel. This trail is steeper and rougher, and takes about 25 to 30 minutes to reach the shore.

2. By Longtail Boat from Patong

If you don’t want to hike, this is the best option and also gives scenic views. Boats depart from the south end of Patong Beach, near the bridge by the Amari Phuket hotel. The ride takes 10 to 15 minutes along the coastline. A round trip costs approximately 3,500 INR per boat; it can fit up to six passengers.

Freedom Beach does not have a pier, so you will have to jump directly into the shallow water from the boat. Carry electronics in a dry bag in case they fall out when you jump.

What is the Entry Fee for Freedom Beach?

  • The north trail route: You need to pay approximately 300 INR per person, which also covers parking if you have driven yourself.
  • Lek Sand Beach Bar route: This path is free to walk and leads to the beach.
  • Longtail boats: Approximately 3,500 INR per boat for a round trip, and they accommodate up to six people. When you take a boat, you don’t have to pay any other entrance fee.

Things to Do at Freedom Beach, Thailand

There are times you need a place to slow down, and for that, Freedom Beach is one of the best places to visit in Phuket.

  • Swimming: The north side of Freedom Beach has the calmest and the right water depth for swimming. The middle section is for the longtail boat stops.
  • Snorkelling: The south side of the beach is the best snorkelling area to spot parrotfish, damselfish, and blue tangs.
  • Sunset Watching: The beach faces west, so you get a clear sunset evening. Longtail boats from Patong stop running between 5 and 6 pm. Sunset in Phuket is around 6:15 pm. If you stay for sunset, you will need to hike back in the dark, which is unsafe. However, you can negotiate with your boat captain on the return time.
  • Volleyball: A volleyball net is set up on the main beach. It is free to use, but take a ball with you.
